Digitalization and the Victim Role of German Industry

Is the digitalization of German industry now falling victim to the drop in orders? I discussed this question last week with the owner of a traditional family business in Germany.

The fact is: In many medium-sized companies, projects in the “development” category are put on hold. And the topic of digitalization is (unfortunately still) one of them.

After it was not uncommon in recent years, “We don’t have time for digitalization at the moment”, I now hear the argument “We have no money for digitalization at the moment” in many places.

From a certain point of view, I can understand this caution. On the other hand, the question arises in my mind which “excuse” comes next?

Germany will not be able to avoid the comprehensive digitalization of medium-sized industries in order to remain competitive. Because the famous examples of large corporations alone are not enough to further develop the backbone of the German economy at the level of the past decades.
